Okirika is a sub-urban town in Rivers state, Nigeria. The town is situated on a small island just south of Port-Harcourt. It lies on the north of the Bonny River and on Okrika Island, 35 miles (56 km) upstream from the Bight of Biafra. The town can be reached by vessels of a draft of 29 feet (9 metres) or less. Okirika was formerly known as a fishing area of the Ijaw tribe in the mangrove swamps of the eastern Niger River delta. In the early 17th century, Okirika became the capital of Okirika Kingdom.
