About Kano, Nigeria

Kano is the state Capital of Kano state (North western), Nigeria. It is situated in the Sahelian geographic region, south of the Sahara. Kano is the commercial nerve center of Northern Nigeria and is the second largest city in Nigeria, after Lagos. The original inhabitants of this area are the Hausas. Kano Metropolis contains six (6) local government areas (LGAs): Kano Municipal, Fagge, Dala, Gwale, Tarauni and Nasarawa; with two additional Local Government Areas, which are: Ungogo and Kumbotso.

The general language spoken in this area is the Hausa language, just as most parts of northern Nigeria. The predominant religion practised in Kano Metropolis is the Muslim religion. The majority of Kano Muslims are Sunni, though a minority adhere to the Shia branch. Christians and followers of other non-Muslim religions form a small part of the population and traditionally lived in the Sabon Gari, or New city. The products exported from Kano to north Africa include textile materials, leather and grains.
