About Borno, Nigeria

Borno is a state in north-eastern Nigeria. The state derived it's name from the ancient Borno empire. Its capital is Maiduguri. Borno state was formed in 1976 from the split of the North-Eastern State. Until 1991 it contained what is now Yobe State. The ethnic groups in this state include Kanuri, Babur and Marghi. The state is dominated by the Kanuri ethnic group. 

It occupies 70,898 square kilometres and occupies the greater part of the Chad Basin. Borno state shares borders with the Republics of Niger to the North, Chad to the North-East and Cameroun to the East.
